In the Tall Grass picks up where Hotel Rwanda left off, focusing on the Hutu and Tutsi as they struggle through Rwanda's unique reconciliation process Gacaca, a network of grassroots community courts. With unprecedented access, this powerful documentary follows a survivor through this historic process as she confronts the man she says murdered her husband and children, giving audiences a stark and terrifying look at how the genocide of 1994 continues to shape the lives of Rwandans today. She receives some justice, and her village finally faces their pain, but she is only one story in hundreds of thousands.

In the Tall Grass delivers a raw and uncompromising look at the tremendous challenges faced by post-genocide countries like Rwanda, as they transition from violence to peace.

Grades: 9-13. Subject area: Africa, Rwanda, Law, Genocide.

"In addition to providing general insight into the painful and arduous process of closure and reconciliation from the Rwandan genocide, the film did an excellent job on the Gacaca community-based court process. Without this reconciliatory process, neither the victims nor the perpetrators of the violence will be able to move on. This title is especially important and timely, given what is continuing to go on in Darfur to this day. I felt like a got a more clear picture of what exactly happened in 1994 Rwanda than I did from either "Hotel Rwanda" or "Ghosts Of Rwanda" (though both of these were very good)." -- Blane Halliday, Notable Videos for Adults Committee member (Collier County Public Library, Naples, Florida)

Subject areas: Africa, Rwanda, Law, Genocide, History
